Teamworks Introductory Chicken Camp Participants, Aug. 2004

Teamworks Introductory Chicken Camp Participants, Jan. 2005
One of the best ways to become a better dog trainer is to practice your
timing, criteria, and rate of reinforcement.
Perhaps you have heard....that one of the most effective (and humbling!) ways to practice these skills is with chickens!!!  A long-time fan and participant of Marian Breland-Bailey & Bob Bailey's chicken camps, Michele Godlevski, (owner of Teamworks) will be offering a Teamworks Chicken Camp for those who have been unable to travel to Arkansas to visit the Baileys.  The object of this workshop is to sharpen your clicker skills and train a chicken to perform basic behaviors.  This workshop will be offered primarily as a training workshop for Teamworks instructors and assistants, but will also be open to the public on a limited basis.  Participants must have experience with clicker training.

Workshop - Description

Objectives: In this workshop, you will learn to apply the fundamentals of clicker training (positive reinforcement training using a clicker as a secondary reinforcer).  Your chicken will be an excellent trainer - you  will be training an animal with lightening-fast reflexes and a very low tolerance for an insufficient rate of reinforcement.  The other advantage of working with a chicken is that the emotional dialogue (like the one that exists between dog and human) is not a factor in training.  Chickens do what works for them.  If you don't set achievable criteria, and reinforce them at a high enough rate, they will simply fly to another trainer's table.  The goal of the workshop is to improve your timing, criteria, and rate of reinforcement and to sharpen your clicker skills.

Our training goals for this weekend workshop will be:

  • Chicken handling
  • Manipulation and use of the feeder-cup/clicker
  • Planning a training session and recording training data
  • Teaching a basic shape or color discrimination behavior
  • (More advanced tasks will be given for repeat campers)

You will find this clicker training experience can be applied to other types of dog training, including all types of dog sports as well as service dog work.

Prerequisites: Participants MUST have previous experience with clicker training.  It is strongly recommended that non-staff participants take either the Teamworks Clicker Basics Class, or its equivalent before Chicken Camp.  Recommended reading material before camp: Clicker Training for Dogs by Karen Pryor and Excel-erated Learning by Pam Reid.

This workshop will held indoors using socialized chickens.  Chickens will be treated humanely and (no matter how the workshop goes for participants) chickens will not be served for lunch at the end of the workshop.  All kidding aside, these chickens will remain pet chickens of the owner, Michele Godlevski.  Sorry - for obvious reasons, no dogs will be allowed at Teamworks Chicken Camp.

This camp is held with Bob Bailey's "blessings".  Please don't hesitate to go visit Bob in Arkansas for one of his fantastic camps.  This Teamworks camp will not be as extensive as the five-day workshops Bob offers.
We merely hope to offer a taste of the Arkansas Chicken Camps...
in tribute to Bob's & Marian's inspirational training.
